Description
Summer vetch is an annual, fast-growing green manure that creates a lot of plant mass.
Vetch is a leguminous plant (Leguminoses). These floriferous crops are very important for bees and other pollinating insects.
These plants can also absorb nitrogen from the air and they loosen the soil nicely due to the strong rooting. The crop dies in winter.
Summer vetch does not completely cover the soil, so sowing this green manure does not sufficiently suppress the development of weeds. However, this can be solved by adding other seeds, such as sunflowers or winter rye.
Summer vetch also feels at home in mixtures. A good example is vetch with Japanese oats. These two species complement each other in their nitrogen use. Together they ensure that extra nitrogen is available for subsequent cultivation.
