Growing outdoor; the sun is for free
Spring is in the air ! It’s time to pop those seeds and start growing your own, in your backgarden or somewhere, secretly, in the woods.
The cheapest and most natural way to grow Cannabis is outdoors. The sun always rises for free and the entire plant recieves enough light. The lower branches develop much better in the sun than indoors under artificial light. It’s a disadvantage that the neighbours, the police or other smokers can see your plants and maybe even steal them.
Ground or pots?
Place your plants in the sun (at least 4 hours direct sunlight a day). Plant them in the open ground or in pots. Plants rooted in the ground usually grow larger than plants restricted by the size of a pot.. However, pots make a plant mobile and the bigger the pot, the larger the plant will be. Fill the pots with some good living soil. Some real easy to use products to make your own super soil, are Lurpe’s Earth Vibes Super soil and BioTab’s Mycotrex. Above all, let nature do its work, give the plant a sunny spot, but never let it dry out.
Spade the garden
If you want to plant your plants in the open ground it is best to prepare the spot beforehand. Make sure the soil is loose and well-aerated (spade!). Make holes about half a meter deep and one meter in diameter. If the earth has to much clay, add for example sand or perlite, basalt meal, lava meal or bentonite and mix it with the earth. An acidic ground (pH<7) needs lime. You can make alkaline soil (pH>7) more acidic by adding organic matter to your garden such as compost, tarred manure, peat, or a combination of these. In order to increase the fertility of the soil, add compost and /or manures. For instance Greenhouse BIO feeding or Plagron’s Supermix. Make sure every plant has enough space. We advise 1 m2 per plant.
The sooner the plants are planted in the soil, the bigger they will be at the end of the season. When spring frosts have past (in the northern hemisphere that’s after the Ice Saints ) you can plant your plants outside and take cuttings until August. The plants start flowering in the middle of August (when the days are getting shorter).
Forced flowering outdoor
If you want to harvest early, you have to shorten the photoperiod (the light cycle) to twelve hours a day. You can do this by covering the plants with light-tight plastic or by moving the pots to a dark room. This way it is also possible to grow tropical varieties.
What kind of seed to choose
Autoflower varieties are very popular to grow outdoor. Easy, robust and fast are the characteristics of an autoflower: 9 to 11 weeks after germinating, you can already harvest. If you start early enough you can have 2 harvests in one year. And for an optimal result it is the best to flower them in the mids of summer. For example: starting to germinate a seed with autoflower-characteristics, on the 15th of june will give you an harvest in the beginning of august. To see our choice in autoflowers you can go here and choose the filter option for autoflower.
Go for something real
Personally I prefer to choose strains that have a normal growing and flowering period which you can harvest in september or oktober. But if you make an obscure space and darken the plant, you can harvest earlier. Anyway, if you want to choose a seed, and flower it with natural light it is recommanded to look at the time of flowering.
Keep an eye on the weather
Although the climate change makes our summers hotter and longer, there is no garantee for the wheather. You don’t want your plant to be washed away because normally the autumn rains have started in october. A plant like Tropicana Punch is very risky because the harvest is forecasted for the end of october and the risk of mold is rising with the number of rain showers. Less chance for mold is when you choose a plant with 7 or 8 weeks of flowering -period. Go here to pick a seed with the recommanded floweringperiod.
